Germany puts its faith in hydro(gen) power from the Valley

The Styria based ANDRITZ AG and the German manufacturer of large engines MAN Energy Solutions aim to collaborate in the future, in international markets, on green hydrogen production using hydropower. A first pilot project is scheduled to start up in Europe this year.

Hydro energy for sustainable economy

Green hydrogen is one of the CO2 neutral energy carriers of the future. In collaboration with ANDRITZ Hydro, MAN now plans to make this raw material available in international markets soon. “Hydroelectric power plants are an ideal, reliable and affordable method for the production of hydrogen in a completely climate-neutral manner. In ANDRITZ, we have gained a world-leading partner in the field of hydropower to jointly develop this vision,” says Uwe Lauber, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer of MAN Energy Solutions. The company is supplying the required electrolysis technology through the associated electrolysis specialist H-TEC SYSTEMS.

High-power project

The first joint pilot project will generate 650 tonnes of green hydrogen using an electrolysis output of up to four MW. In follow-on projects, it is intended to increase the installed electrolysis capacity to up to one hundred MW. To supply green hydrogen to Germany and the EU, the two companies are also looking to set up energy partnerships with other countries. The aim is to jointly develop growth markets in Europe and worldwide.
