Ecolyte

Ecolyte develops and tests renewable organic based electrolytes for redox flow batteries.
Ecolyte sees itself as a diverse and innovative team that has set itself the task of playing an active role in the energy transition. The storage of green energy in the form of electricity plays an essential role. One possible form of electricity storage can be in redox flow batteries. The major advantage over conventional battery types is that the energy is stored in a liquid electrolyte whose storage capacity can be increased as desired simply by increasing the tank volume. The power of the battery can also be easily scaled via the number of cells. Commercially available systems are based on vanadium, for example, which usually has to be mined in opencast mines. Our goal is to use the well-known principle of the flow battery and to replace the vanadium with bio-based, renewable raw materials. This goal has brought together a highly motivated, multidisciplinary team. What sets us apart is our experience in a wide variety of fields. The Ecolyte GmbH team consists of Prof. Dr. Stefan Spirk, who heads the Chemistry and Biobased Materials working group at the Institute for Biobased Materials and Paper Technology, Dr. Wolfgang Zitz, whose many years of experience in top management have made a significant contribution to the success of the company, Dr. Werner Schlemmer, who helped develop Ecolyte's fundamental core know-how during his university career, DI Georg Rudelstorfer, who is responsible for scaling up as a process engineer, and Dieter Wurm, who completes the team with his expertise in marketing and sales. Ecolyte develops and markets the core know-how of redox flow batteries based on renewable raw materials, including the electrolytes, the reaction cells and the battery management system. The market entry is planned together with a potential industrial partner, who will also be responsible for the assembly of the batteries. Ecolyte is thus making a contribution to a climate-neutral future.

Ecolyte
Biobased liquid electrolyte from renewable resources for organic redox flow batteries.
Our products are electrochemically active materials that can be manufactured from renewable resources. We develop and test new electrolyte pairings with respect to their storage capacity, potential difference, long-term stability and performance yield. Ecolyte has extensive test procedures for liquid electrolytes. From cyclic voltammetry to single cells and battery stacks, we develop the necessary processes to produce the corresponding substances on an industrial scale. We see the continuous further development of electrolytes as well as membrane technology as a necessity for the long-term success of our project.
