New Siemens Energy plant for wind power transformers opens in Wollsdorf

Siemens Energy today opened a new plant for wind power transformers in Wollsdorf (Weiz district). In the future, transformers will be manufactured on 25,000 square meters of production space. These transformers adjust the voltage in wind turbines so that the energy generated can be fed into the power grid.

The grand opening ceremony was attended by numerous guests, including Governor Mario Kunasek, Deputy Governor Manuela Khom, and State Councilors Claudia Holzer and Willibald Ehrenhöfer, who were there to offer their congratulations. On behalf of the federal government, Siemens Energy welcomed Federal Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and State Secretary Elisabeth Zehetner, while Gunhild Grieve, Chief Financial Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, represented the customer. The electrical and energy technology manufacturer itself was represented by Aleš Prešern (Managing Director of Siemens Energy Austria), Sabrina Manschek (Head of the Wollsdorf site), Bernhard Göß (Commercial Plant Manager), and Tim Oliver Holt (Managing Director of Siemens Energy Grid Technologies).

“Something great has been created here in Wollsdorf. This project impressively demonstrates what can be achieved when companies, politicians, and administrators work together effectively and efficiently for the common good—whether in the area of approval procedures or through the economic development system itself. As the state government, we are currently making progress in the area of deregulation, which will enable us to position Styria even more strongly as an attractive location for industry in the future. As politicians, we will certainly be a strong and stable partner in this endeavor. I would like to thank everyone involved for their excellent work. I wish the company and all its employees every success and all the best,” said Governor Mario Kunasek.

“The new Siemens Energy plant in Wollsdorf demonstrates what regional cooperation and sustainable location development can achieve. Not only is a modern production site being created here, but jobs are also being created in the region—a real project for the future of Styria. Siemens Energy is a prime example of what makes our business location so special: innovative strength, hard work, and international competitiveness. We are an exporting country. Every second job in our province depends directly or indirectly on exports. That is precisely why it is crucial that we push ahead with investments like this, keep added value in the province, and create new opportunities for the people of Styria. Because Styria is and remains Austria’s region of opportunity – because we combine tradition, technology, and drive. I would like to thank everyone involved, as well as those responsible in the municipality of St. Ruprecht an der Raab, for their cooperation and contribution to this success story,” emphasized Deputy Governor Manuela Khom.

A few key figures illustrate the importance of the Wollsdorf site:

  • The plant will ultimately employ around 450 people from approximately 25 countries.
  • The production area covers around 25,000 square meters.
  • The site will have an export quota of around 80 percent and supply components to approximately 70 countries.
  • Transformers for wind turbines will be manufactured. These have the central task of bringing the electrical energy generated by the generator to a voltage level that is suitable for feeding into the power grid.
  • These products are mainly used in large offshore wind turbines, for example in the North Sea.
