The Graz-based start-up Kite Rise has developed an innovative sodium-ion-based home storage system. According to the developers, this technology promises greater safety, sustainability, and a longer service life than comparable models. Series production is scheduled to start in 2026.
The storage battery is based on sodium-ion technology, which offers advantages over conventional lithium-ion storage systems. According to CEO Harald Autischer, the new battery is safer because there is no risk of fire or toxic gases. It is also more sustainable, as it does not use lithium or critical raw materials such as cobalt and nickel. One particular advantage over lithium-ion batteries is its high temperature stability.

Autischer explained that the battery developed for home use guarantees up to 10,000 charging cycles, which corresponds to a service life of around ten years. This makes the battery developed in Styria suitable for use in conjunction with a photovoltaic system and an electric car, for example.

Series production from 2026

The start-up plans to start series production of the system, which includes both the inverter and the battery storage unit, in 2026. Despite competition from existing lithium-ion systems, Autischer is confident that the new technology offers an opportunity to establish itself on the market. With the presentation of the “Guardian Angel” on Wednesday, the Austrian start-up has taken the first step towards market launch.
