VTU Engineering GmbH

VTU Group is an internationally operating technology and engineering service provider, specializing in the Life Sciences and chemical industries. The company offers comprehensive engineering services for plant investment projects, covering all project phases, including procurement and construction management. Additionally, the company supports its customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their plants. Services range from strategic planning to implementation and optimization, as well as comprehensive support during ongoing operations. VTU also offers solutions for industrial digitalization and reducing the ecological footprint. Its clients include globally leading international pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
VTU was founded in Graz in 1990 as a process and environmental technology service provider with its own pilot plant for process engineering trials. We have grown steadily and become an international engineering and technology group that implements projects worldwide. Today, 1,100 employees work at 32 locations in Austria (Grambach, Kundl/Langkampfen, Linz, Pinkafeld, Villach & Vienna), Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Belgium and Romania. We have the greatest influence on the sustainability of projects when we work with our customers to plan processes and plants that minimise energy and resource consumption and use innovative recycling and circular economy technologies. At the same time, we are stepping up our activities in innovative projects, e.g. the production and use of green hydrogen as a raw material and energy source, the chemical recycling of plastic waste, the recovery of solvents and other operating materials from waste streams, and the reuse of treated process wastewater as a valuable resource. In doing so, we work according to the principles of green chemistry and are therefore at the cutting edge of technology and beyond. This experience benefits the environment through the improvement or redesign of sustainable process plants – and thus strengthens the competitiveness of our customers.

COâ‚‚ reduction, process stabilization & circular economy
These goals were at the center of an innovative project by VTU with Alpacem Cement Austria at the Wietersdorf site, which has already been recognized with several nominations.
By 2050, climate-neutral cement is to be produced in Austria – an important factor in this is process emissions. Alpacem aims to achieve this goal by 2035 with its "Compass to zero CO₂," a three-stage strategy plan. A new, model-based process control at the Alpacem cement plant in Wietersdorf marks a significant advancement. Developed together with VTU, this technology enables CO₂-optimized raw meal production, where up to 50% of natural raw materials are replaced by mineral residues (substitute raw materials/SRM) such as construction waste, biomass ashes, foundry sands, and mill scale. SRMs are by-products from other industries that can serve as substitutes for primary raw materials like limestone and marl. Previous solutions failed due to the complexity of the processes and the specific plant design. Additionally, SRMs often have highly fluctuating chemical compositions and limited availability. The consequences are frequent changes in raw material components and ongoing recipe adjustments. Alpacem found the ideal partners in the VTU Automation & Industrial Data Solutions (IDS) Department team for developing a tailored solution. The new control system integrates residues into raw meal production, consistently focusing on the circular economy. Florian Pöllabauer and Martin Rohrer from VTU, Christine Gröll (Laboratory and Material Flow Management at Alpacem), and Christian Novak (Head of IT/OT at Alpacem) contributed significantly to this success as an expert team, together with VTU project staff Wolfgang Köck, Stefan Pauli, Sebastian Wolf, Wolfgang Reitbauer, Patrick Noack, Simon Weinberger, Alexander Stindl, Christoph Lex, Leonardo Abbate, Christian Mück, Patrik Borkovic, and Markus Lindner. The collaboration was complemented by the Montanuniversität (Technical University) in Leoben, where Christine Gröll developed a quality control concept for cement plants without a blending bed as part of her dissertation. The core of the technology is an optimization algorithm that analyzes and adjusts process and quality data in real-time. This innovative in-house development creates long-term flexibility and efficiency, independent of external systems. The control system successfully went into operation in the summer of 2024. The environmental impacts of the project were recognized with a nomination for the TRIGOS Award in the "Climate Protection" category. Additionally, Christine Gröll received a nomination for the ÖGUT Environmental Award in the "Women in Environmental Technology" category. This pioneering project demonstrates how innovative technologies can combine sustainability and economic efficiency – an important step towards a resource-conserving and climate-friendly future. Due to the great success, the foundation for follow-up projects with Alpacem has been laid: The funding application for "Transformation of Industry" in the form of substitute raw material processing for decarbonization in collaboration with the Grambacher Process Engineering team has already been completed. Other offered projects range from an implemented raw mill control to data analytics and the automated control of a crane system to support substitute raw material processing by VTU.
