At the historic inner-city industrial site in Weiz, significant chapters in Styrian industrial history have been written in the field of transformer manufacturing since the end of the 19th century. With the expansion of winding production and the construction of an additional test facility by Siemens Energy, the next milestone is now being reached: Siemens Energy is investing 95 million euros in the site. Once completed, the production capacity for phase-shifting transformers will be roughly doubled from early 2028. “This is good news in economically challenging times, as these are highly skilled jobs that are not only being retained here in Eastern Styria but also created through the plant expansion. As Governor, I would particularly like to thank Siemens Energy for the great confidence it has placed in Styria – it sends a strong signal when an internationally active company decides to develop sites in our province. Increasing energy sovereignty is the order of the day, and Siemens Energy is making a significant contribution in this regard with its highly specialised products,” emphasised Governor Mario Kunasek at the foundation-laying ceremony for the plant expansion.

Deputy Governor Manuela Khom emphasised: “The fact that Siemens Energy is investing a further 95 million euros or so in the Weiz site is a real success story for Styria as a business location. This not only strengthens the Weiz production site, but also underlines Styria’s importance as a reliable partner. This investment also demonstrates that exports are and will remain a key driver of our prosperity – what is developed in Styria is in demand worldwide. We are therefore working all the more intensively to position Styria on the international stage and are seeking economic cooperation across the globe. I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Siemens Energy Weiz on the laying of the foundation stone and wish the company every success!”

Alongside Governor Kunasek and Deputy Governor Khom, those attending the foundation-laying ceremony – which was accompanied by music from the works band – included Provincial Minister for Economic Affairs Willibald Ehrenhöfer, IV President Georg Knill and Mayor Bettina Bauernhofer, who congratulated Siemens Energy Board Member Tim Oliver Holt, Managing Director Aleš Prešern and Plant Manager Martin Kalcher on the launch of the project.

Expansion of the Siemens Energy site in Weiz:

Around 1,200 people are currently employed at the Siemens Energy site in Weiz. The site currently covers an area of approximately 58,000 square metres, making the Weiz plant Siemens Energy’s largest site for the development and manufacture of transformers. The expansion, which has now begun at a cost of 95 million euros, will create around 12,000 square metres of additional production space. As this will enable production capacity to double from 2028 onwards, up to 100 additional jobs will be created. The project will be carried out exclusively on existing land without any additional land sealing.
