In Emden, Lower Saxony, the North German energy supplier EWE plans to build one of Europe’s largest hydrogen production facilities by the end of 2027, as well as one of Germany’s first electrolysis plants.
OSMO Membrane Systems GmbH, a highly specialized company within the GAW Group, is pleased to have been awarded the contract by EWE Hydrogen GmbH / EWE AG to plan and supply sustainable and highly efficient water treatment systems for the production of ultrapure water for the East Frisia electrolysis plant.

EWE is building the centerpiece of the national and European hydrogen economy

As part of the large-scale “Clean Hydrogen Coastline” (CHC) project, one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in all of Europe is being built in Emden, East Frisia: With a capacity of 320 megawatts, it is set to produce green hydrogen starting in late 2027, primarily for industry and heavy-duty transport. The annual hydrogen output produced in the electrolyzer in Emden amounts to 1,000,000,000 kWh. This corresponds to 1 TWh of energy.
The electrolyzers used in Emden have the highest requirements for water quality. Our turnkey, multi-stage water treatment plant will reliably and consistently meet the high water quality requirements for electrolysis through the targeted selection of process steps and combinations based on membrane technologies.

At the same time:
– minimal use of chemicals and energy,
– no significant on-site chemical storage,
– low wastewater volumes due to the use of water-saving stages (only a concentration of the raw water takes place)
– and the option to retrofit a river water treatment stage upstream
… many factors were also taken into account that enable the economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable production of truly “green hydrogen.”
