With the implementation of a new Sulfur Oxidation Plant (SOP), P&P Industries AG Sulfuric Acid Technology, in collaboration with Futamura UK, is taking an important step toward climate-friendly industrial processes. The goal of the project is not only to reduce emissions from cellulose production but also to consistently utilize them as a resource.

The developed process solution treats both “lean” and “rich” exhaust gases and uses liquid sulfur simultaneously as an energy source and reaction medium. The result is highly concentrated, industrial-grade sulfuric acid as well as saturated steam—both valuable process media that are directly reintegrated into the production cycle. No liquid or solid waste streams are generated in the process. In this way, the plant sustainably improves both the site’s environmental footprint and its energy and resource efficiency.

A key milestone in the project was the conduct of a comprehensive HAZOP study in Graz. International experts from Futamura UK worked together with the team from P&P Industries AG and partners in a structured, interdisciplinary process to systematically analyze the planned plant. Taking all local and regulatory requirements into account, potential risks were identified and optimized at an early stage.

The project serves as an example of how innovative process engineering, international cooperation, and corporate social responsibility can work together—and how technologies from the Green Tech Valley are making a tangible contribution to the transformation of energy- and emissions-intensive industries.
