New technology for renewable energy generation: ANDRITZ starts up pilot plant for biomass torrefaction in Frohnleiten, Austria
29. Oktober 2012
International technology Group ANDRITZ and the municipality of Frohnleiten, Austria, have officially started up a pilot plant for treatment of biomass. The plant is based on the ACB (Accelerated Carbonized Biomass) process newly developed by ANDRITZ SEPARATION and uses torrefaction to generate high-grade fuel from biomass for use in power plants.Torrefaction is a thermal process […]
Torrefaction is a thermal process for raising the energy density of biomass, which in turn increases its calorific value. Woody biomass, like wood chips or sawmill chips, is compacted and upgraded at the premises of Frohnleiten waste treatment plant using the innovative ANDRITZ torrefaction technology. This improves the fuel properties of the biomass, thus less fossil fuel is needed in power plants by co-firing with CO2-neutral biomass. In future, other low-cost biomass raw and waste materials are also to be upgraded in turnkey torrefaction plants (with a capacity of around 50,000t/a) to become particularly energy-rich fuels.
The ANDRITZ GROUP generates more than half of its sales from systems, machines, and processes that can produce clean energy from renewable energy resources, like biomass or hydropower. ANDRITZ Executive Board member Humbert Köfler adds: “The new ACB technology, which enables co-firing with fossil fuels, is a further contribution by our company towards protecting the environment and enhancing energy efficiency.”
The ACB research and development project, involving Polytechnik Luft- und Feuerungstechnik and Wild & Partner in addition to ANDRITZ, is funded by resources from the Austrian government’s Climate and Energy Fund as part of the “New Energies 2020” project and supported by the Austrian Research Institute ÖFI.
