Faster than the world markets

In 2009, Styrian environmental engineering grew by 5 % in terms of employment and real turnover, and in 2010, a growth in turnover of 16 % is expected

Research, engineering and environmental competence are highly concentrated in Styria, which is also decisive for the distinction of ECO WORLD STYRIA as the best environmental engineering network worldwide.

The latest economic figures for the year of crisis 2009 underpin the positive dynamics of the 160 ECO WORLD STYRIA companies: these achieved an increase in turnover and employees in the field of environmental engineering of an average 5% compared to the record year of 2008. Thus, more than 14,000 people are already employed in Styrian environmental engineering and generate 2.8 billion € per year, more than 90% of which in export. On average, the companies underwent real growth by 18.4% per year from 2006-2009, which is substantially faster than the global markets with around 10%. 5,000 environmental engineering jobs were created in these ECO companies.

With the participation of four private companies and research institutions in the organisation, the ECO WORLD STYRIA cluster has been a model for the public-private partnership for technology and location development since July 2010.

Beside the previous owners, the Styrian Business Promotion Agency SFG, the province of Styria and the city of Graz, the following participated in the GmbH from among the ECO member companies: Binder+Co AG, equadrat group, the Research Centre for Integrated Building Technologies FIBAG and KWB Biomass Heating Systems. These contribute to the operative control of ECO, in order to support the location and the 160 ECO member companies in becoming the World’s Green Tech Valley.

“Working in networks and clusters has been implemented in Styria in a particularly successful manner”, says Dr. Christian Buchmann, member of the Provincial Government for Economy and Innovation. “With full force, we jointly pursue the vision of developing Styria into the Green Tech Valley analogously to the Silicon Valley. This vision is aiming at the highest density of global technology leaders within one hour’s drive”, emphasises ECO Cluster CEO Ing. Bernhard Puttinger.
