Wood as a fuel source of the future 

FILLING OUR TANK IN THE FUTURE – FOSSIL FUEL INDEPENDENCE – THE MOBILE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED

BIOENERGY 2020+, based in Güssing, has been researching and developing the production of diesel and kerosene from wood for several years. Now a pilot plant will be built under a new project, to improve the production efficiency for second generation biofuels even further.

Instead of burning waste with low efficiency, a clean fuel is produced which can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and also produces lower harmful emissions in diesel engines. This is due to the excellent quality of the FT diesel. The addition of an FT fuel to conventional fossil diesel produces a fuel with premium quality.

The new project, which will run for 4 years, will realise a plant producing 1 barrel/day (159 litres/day), against the previous 5kg/day. This represents an important step towards scaling-up and will develop valuable insights on the path from laboratory to industrial plant. In particular, the flow behaviour of the slurry reactor will be evaluated by measurement, in order to establish a sufficient and reliable data set for up-scaling to industry scale. In addition, the process cost efficiency will also be improved so that production of second generation biofuels is economically viable in the future.
