Contact water from a copper mine, Sevilla, Spain 

The multistage ultrafiltration – reverse osmosis membrane unit for the treatment of contact water of a copper mine went in operation in July 2010 with a yearly capacity of 1,4 million m3. With a membrane area of 10.000m², the size of a soccer field, it is the biggest membranfiltration unit in Europe for this kind of treatment.

Intrusion of groundwater in a copper mine means that the water will be contaminated with heavy metals and inorganic substances. To keep the water balance in order, it is necessary to purify the so called “Contact water” with a high selective purification system to guarantee that the groundwater can be infiltrated according to the European Drinking Water Guideline 98/83/EC.

ROTREAT Abwasserreinigung GmbH developed in cooperation with MP Medioambiente (Spanish distribution partner) an innovative and economical process, a combination of the latest state of the art membrane technologies, to ensure that the targets and restrictions are guaranteed for such or any other waste water applications.

The concentrate staged membrane filtration plants, total investment of 3,5 mio. Euro, are installed in 10 x 40 foot standardized containers. The pre filtration is handled by a water strainer with a removal rate up to 0,15mm, followed by an Ultrafiltration with a separation of 0,1µm. The pre filtered water is purified by a serial pressure staged reverse osmoses, consisting of a spiral reverse osmoses and the latest and patented invention in the plate module technology, the so called RCDT module (Radial Channel Disc Tube) by ROTREAT Abwasserreinigung GmbH. The operating pressure up to 70bar permit a concentration factor of 10 (recovery rate < 90%).
