ANDRITZ HYDRO to supply equipment for the world´s first tidal lagoon hydroelectric power plant project in Swansea Bay, Wales 

Following an international tender process, Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay PLC. selected the GE / ANDRITZ HYDRO consortium as the preferred supplier for the supply of electromechanical equipment for the world´s first tidal lagoon hydroelectric project in Swansea Bay, Wales.

An agreement on the implementation of preparatory work has now been signed. The tendering volume for the consortium is around 400 million Euro. The contract share attributable to ANDRITZ HYDRO amounts to approximately 250 million Euro, with a substantial value added proportion for the UK . After fulfilling all the requirements, the main contract for the supply of the electromechanical equipment is planned to come into force in the course of this year, and the start of commercial operation in 2019.

The tidal lagoons hydroelectric power plant will be built in the Severn Estuary and equipped with 16 machine-sets with an installed capacity of more than 20 megawatts each. The Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world. Located in the mouth of Swansea Bay it benefits from an average tidal range of 8.5 metres during the spring tides. The hydroelectric power plant will provide clean, renewable and predictable energy for more than 155,000 households and make a significant contribution to meeting the UK´s targets for reducing CO2 emissions with an annual reduction of more than 236,000 tonnes of CO2.
