EU-funded initiatives aim to improve the quality of citizens´ lives in the European regions


The fifth edi­tion of Regio­Stars 2012 Awards for most inno­va­tive and inspir­ing Euro­pe­an region­al pro­jects were offi­cial­ly announced in Brus­sels. Five pro­jects, out of 24 qual­i­fied for the final, received a crys­tal tro­phy, the big­gest award for con­tri­bu­tion to region­al devel­op­ment and growth. They are all fund­ed by EU region­al funds or the Cohe­sion Fund. The awards were pre­sent­ed by Johan­nes Hahn, Com­mis­sion­er for Region­al Pol­i­cy and Luc van den Bran­de, Pres­i­dent of the Jury and former Pres­i­dent of the Com­mit­tee of the Regions. This year´s win­ners are mod­el pro­jects in low-car­bon econ­o­my, cli­mate change adap­ta­tion and com­bat­ing mar­gi­nal­i­sa­tion, all with the aim of improv­ing the qual­i­ty of cit­i­zens´ lives, stat­ed Com­mis­sion­er Hahn.

The Aus­tri­an Eco World Styr­ia project, founder of a clus­ter of 170 clean tech­nol­o­gy com­pa­nies won in the cat­e­go­ry Smart Growth. Since the start of the Green Tech Val­ley 5,000 new jobs were cre­at­ed. GRaBS is the name of the ini­ti­a­tive award­ed in the ´Sus­tain­a­ble Growth´ cat­e­go­ry. Par­tic­i­pat­ing in the project 14 part­ners from 8 coun­tries dem­on­strate that sound urban eco pat­terns of green and blue infra­struc­ture can play vital role in cre­at­ing cli­mate resil­ient devel­op­ment. ´Old­er peo­ple for Old­er peo­ple´ project is pro­vid­ing effect­ive serv­i­ces to the eld­er­ly in rural com­mu­ni­ties. ´Cit­y­Star´ is the cat­e­go­ry in which the Swed­ish project SOM ´South East Mal­mo´ won for its inte­grat­ed strat­e­gy for social, envi­ron­men­tal and finan­cial sus­tain­a­bil­i­ty in are­as, where minor­i­ty groups are affect­ed by unem­ploy­ment. ´In­form­ing the pub­lic´ lead­er is the Pol­ish Pod­las­kie region web­site, which pro­vides with just one click full infor­ma­tion on all EU pro­grammes and invest­ments in the voiv­od­ship.

Can­di­dates for the 2013 award are invit­ed to present their pro­jects at the ´Open days´ in Octo­ber this year in Brus­sels.
