JOANNEUM RESEARCH supported Brauerei Gratzer in becoming Austria’s first climate-neutral brewery

The Gratzer brewery in the Kaindorf eco-region is the first and so far only Austrian climate-neutral brewery.

The approach of the Gratzer brewery differs from the other producers in that not only internal production was considered for the CO2 balance. The JOANNEUM RESEARCH institute in Graz examined the entire value-creation chain of the beer as part of a life cycle analysis. Starting from the production of the raw materials, through the malting and brewing process, all the way to the transport to the end-customer, all carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were included. The result is the “carbon footprint” of a bottle of beer, which comes to about 120g of CO2-equivalent per bottle of natural beer.

The climate-neutral status was achieved through numerous emission-saving measures taken in the production process and the purchase of CO2 certificates from the Kaindorf eco-region, which is able to provide them from the Humus Formation Project.

The Gratzer brewery (http://www.gratzerbrau.at/) was recognised this year for this successful project with the “Excellent Project Award” as part of the 2012 Daphne Environmental Protection Prize

The work of JOANNEUM RESEARCH was largely covered by an innovation cheque from the Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft [FFG, Austrian Research Promotion Agency].
