The objective of the „print.PV“ research project, in which the JOANNEUM RESEARCH MATERIALS Institute is playing a major role, is the development of a completely new technology for the production of flexible photovoltaic film. It is funded with nearly € 3.2 million from the Climate and Energy Fund. Together with the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit), the Climate Fund is promoting the development of advanced energy technologies in Austria, through its energy research program, with the objective of making renewable energy safe, sustainable and affordable. „The application of photovoltaics has experienced a tremendous increase in recent years. This is the direct result of continuous research and development. Additional aspects, such as customisable and flexible solar cells provide further opportunities in the building-integrated application of photovoltaics. I am proud that Austria, through proactive research and technology development in this technology area, is amongst the world leaders,“ said Minister of Technology, Alois Stoeger .

The „print.PV“ research project is founded on the highly productive, cost-saving solutions in the printing industry, which together with the already patented crystalsol photovoltaic film lead to significant product advantages.

Up-scaling of the technology is being carried out within the scope of a production partnership with the Forster Verkehrs- und Werbetechnik GmbH. The common objective is the development of manufacturing technologies for flexible photovoltaic films with production line speeds up to 40m/min. „In addition to the scientific and technical coordination of the entire project, the central task of JOANNEUM RESEARCH is to develop a fast laser process that allows rear-side contact of the photovoltaic films with the corresponding line speeds,“ reported Dr. Gerhard Peharz of the Light and Optical Technologies research group

The „print.PV“ consortium unites some of the most renowned Austrian research institutes in the field of polymer chemistry, printed electronics, photonics and thin film technology – such as JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft, the Polymer Competence Center Leoben, the NanoTecCenter

Weiz and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology – as well as the industrial partners crystalsol and Forster. In close collaboration with experts in materials and process development, the concept is to be driven forward within the next 3 years from the first proof-of-concept to validation in a realistic environment.
