Energy of the future generated from brewery waste by spent grains fermentation plant – investment level in mid single-digit million range

„Brewing a better Future“ is the name of Heineken´s sustainability initiative. A key technology for the realisation of this objective comes from the Styrian plant engineering manufacturer, BDI – BioEnergy International AG: A spent-grain fermentation plant recycles brewery wastes to supply the energy for the Göss brewery. The total investment for the turnkey plant reaches into the mid single-digit million range.

Brau Union Austria AG, part of the international Heineken family, places emphasis on the sustainability of beer production. Under the group initiative „Brewing a Better Future“ the world´s first „large-scale green brewery“ has become a reality at Göss / Leoben, where the brewery has chosen to use renewable energy in all the processes. As a result only renewable energy sources will be used for the energy supply, thereby reducing the CO2 emissions from fossil fuels throughout the brewing process to zero. The objective has already been implemented to a large extent with hydroelectric power, biomass district heating and solar thermal systems.

In the future, natural gas fossil fuel will be replaced by the BDI spent grains fermentation plant. The energy generated from the brewery wastes is used in the brewery to produce steam and the excess gas is converted into electricity. In addition, the digestate, a by-product of the spent-grains fermentation plant, is used as a high quality fertilizer.

As Head Brewer, Andreas Werner, proudly explains; „Our ultimate goal was the conversion of the Göss brewery into a completely CO2-neutral operation. This objective will be achieved with the spent grains fermentation plant.“
