The MODUM project („Models for Optimising Dynamic Urban Mobility“) was developed as a new proactive, needs-orientated approach to transport control in urban areas.

MODUM not only provides local city authorities a tool for sustainable transport management; it also makes information available, which allows travellers to get from A to B, without unexpected disruptions, using an energy-efficient choice of multi-modal transport options.

The MODUM system consists of several interconnected core components: At the centre is a traffic flow simulator that provides a complete overview of traffic conditions in the entire transport network. This simulator is supplied by two other services with information. Firstly, information is gathered, using data from private and public transport, on the fastest and most environmentally friendly route over the whole transport network. Secondly, the service focuses on predicting the exact duration for the desired route.
The interaction of these three components makes MODUM a unique, innovative tool for sustainable traffic management. The MODUM system not only provides a useful app for people who are travelling in the city, and an information system to support the city traffic department, it also encompasses the development of the necessary server infrastructure that allows MODUM to be used throughout the cities of Europe.

A consortium of nine partners from 5 European countries worked on the MODUM project (project duration: 1.10.2011 – 31.12.2014). MODUM was co-funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union for research, technological development and demonstration activities. Further  information on MODUM can be found on the project website http://www.modum-project.eu/
