ATM Obtains Valuable Secondary Raw Materials by Means of Briquetting Aluminium Cuttings

Briquetting using briquetting presses made by ATM Recyclingsystems GmbH brings considerable benefits for transportation and also in comparison with the introduction of loose cuttings in the melting process, which was examined by way of a joint research project with the Leoben University of Mining and Metallurgy.

The press agglomeration (briquetting) of metal cuttings makes an important contribution in the recycling industry to the production of valuable secondary raw materials. The volume of cuttings produced is reduced by up to 99% by means of briquetting presses, enabling massive savings with regard to transport routes, and an increased extraction of precious metals in the recycling process (see picture below).

In the research project with the Leoben University of Mining and Metallurgy, department of non-ferrous metallurgy, loose cuttings and briquettes made of the same aluminium alloy were put in a molten bath in order to examine their burn-off behaviour during melting and/or to identify the assets and drawbacks of both variants.

The tests were carried out with and without salt to cover the bath in each case, which enabled even better results regarding the burn-off behaviour in the melting process (reduced production of aluminium oxide). Furthermore briquetting has other benefits, such as recovery of the cooling lubricant, volume reduction, reduction of fine particles and pollution load and reduction of fire and explosion hazard of a wide variety of different metal cuttings.
